The ranks of the minor arcana are one line walked from ace to ten, and the line holds in all four suits: the Ace is the element at its purest and least differentiated. Ace of Wands is fire not yet touched to anything, Ace of Cups feeling not yet given to anyone, Ace of Swords clarity not yet applied to a problem, Ace of Pentacles resource not yet invested.
That explains two things about Aces. First, they're almost entirely good — nothing has happened yet, so nothing has cost anything. Second, they have almost no content — for the same reason. The picture is a hand out of a cloud offering the thing; taking it is on you.
Where you'll recognise it: a new idea, a new person, a new invitation, the sense that something might be possible. Running well, an Ace is the cleanest of beginnings — nothing has been spoiled yet. Stuck, the Ace's problem is staying an Ace: treating possibility as achievement, collecting starts and never taking the second step. The card supplies the seed. Soil and time are yours to bring.
