The animals are nicknames for the twelve earthly branches, and the branches were originally divisions of time. The rat holds 子, eleven at night to one — the darkest hour, and the point where a new day formally begins. The rat is first not because it's strongest but because it stands where nothing has moved yet.

You'll recognise it here: you smell an opening earlier than others and take a small step while they're still watching; being completely idle makes you anxious; and you usually have several lines running, because betting on one makes you uneasy.

Running well, the rat is whoever positioned early: by the time everyone sees it you're already inside. That advantage doesn't come from force, it comes from the time gap. Blocked, it goes two ways. One is a finger in everything and depth in nothing. The other is turning alertness into guardedness — seeing so much risk that you hold something back even from people you could trust. What the rat practises isn't restraint. It's committing to one — your problem was never a shortage of options, it was never choosing.
