OxThe twelve zodiac animalsChinese Zodiac

The ox holds 丑, one to three in the morning — the deepest part of the night, a long way from light. That position explains everything: the ox's work happens where nobody is looking and a long way from any visible result. The ability to last through that stretch is the whole of its value.

You'll recognise it here: you can stay with one thing long enough for other people to have changed jobs three times; you don't express much, but your position is clear if you read the behaviour; and being hurried makes you slower, by reflex.

Running well, the ox is whoever actually finishes: the long boring road between idea and object, which most people leave partway. That reliability accumulates slowly and almost never leaks. Blocked, the ox holds on past the point it should — treating 'I can still manage' as a virtue and emptying out silently; or persisting on a route already proven closed, because admitting the change is harder than continuing. The ox's practical lesson is looking up periodically to check the heading: your endurance is a scarce resource and deserves to be spent on the right road.
