The Devil is fifteen, the chain; the Tower is sixteen, the chain broken by force. A tower on a mountaintop is struck by lightning, the crown flies off, two figures fall. There's a detail in the picture: the tower has no door. Whatever's built on the wrong foundation with no way out can only be opened from outside — that's the Tower's mechanism. Sixteen is four squared: the Emperor's structure pushed to its limit, so rigid it can only be broken.
Where you'll recognise it: sudden collapse — a relationship, a belief, something that looked solid coming down in days; and the later realisation that the signs were there. This card is about necessary destruction: not punishment, clearance.
Running well (the Tower's well is painful but real), it's truth arriving: the false couldn't hold, and you're finally free. Stuck, its problem is rebuilding the same tower in the rubble — never looking at the foundation, only blaming the lightning. The falling figures land. After the Tower comes the Star, and that order is one of the promises tarot makes.
