The Hierophant is five, rules given; the Lovers are six, and you choose for yourself. A man and a woman stand beneath an angel, two trees behind them — the tree of life and the tree of knowledge. It's Eden, and the point is the serpent: once knowledge arrives, choice arrives, and innocence is over. Six in the minors restores balance; in the majors it's two independent things joining voluntarily into one.
Where you'll recognise it: the moment a decision is real, reaching the 'together or not' threshold with someone, and discovering that wanting both amounts to choosing neither. This card is about values — what you choose says who you are.
Running well, the Lovers are the truest state: both sides match, the choice agrees with who you are, the relationship has wholeness. Stuck, its problem is not choosing — standing between the trees indefinitely, letting someone else decide for you, or choosing and then forever looking back at the unchosen side. The angel above isn't there to bless. It's there to remind you: after this step, you answer for it.
