Wood is the outward-growing end of the five. Its picture is a plant coming up in spring: not the strongest thing, but the most directional — grass lifts tarmac not through force but by pushing one way, continuously, without stopping. You'll recognise it in yourself like this: stagnation bothers you more than hard work does; when someone asks why it has to be now you can't quite answer, but you know that waiting longer will kill the thing; you come alive in rooms with space in them and wilt under layers of approval — not out of disobedience, but because approval layers genuinely take the nutrients out.

Running well, wood makes you the person things finally start moving around: you can open, and you can pull others along. Blocked, it shows up two ways. One is hardness — pushing at something you know won't give, because stopping is worse than the wall. The other is scatter — ten shoots at once, each growing a little, none of them becoming timber. They're the same problem: the energy has no road long enough to run down. Which is why, for wood, finding a direction isn't a self-help metaphor. It's the most practical resource management you have.
