Earth stands in the middle of the cycle; the other four all pass through it. That isn't about status, it's about function — earth is the layer that converts and stores. Fire's ash becomes earth, and metal only forms inside it. So the core of earth isn't slowness, it's catching: you pick up what falls, so naturally that you've never noticed it's work. You'll recognise it when the party ends and you're the one clearing up; when other people's feelings arrive at you and lose half their charge; when you decide slowly and then almost never go back on it.

Running well, earth is the ground everyone else stands on. There's a structural problem with that kind of value: it's only visible when it's absent, so being chronically underrated is the normal condition rather than bad luck. Under strain, earth over-catches — taking on what was never yours and turning it into resentment. The classical word is 土鬱, and the 鬱 isn't sadness, it's congestion: more coming in than going out. So the most practical lesson for earth is learning to decline, not learning to carry more. You already carry plenty. That was never the problem.
