FireThe five elementsFive Elements 五行

Fire is the only one of the five that has to be witnessed to exist. Wood grows by itself and water runs by itself, but fire needs fuel, air, and somebody in the room — a fire burning in an empty house is the same as one that never burned. That explains a lot of what looks contradictory in you: your energy in company and your energy alone barely seem to belong to the same person; you understand your own idea better after saying it once than after thinking it ten times; with a response you can do more than you're capable of, and without one you can't be bothered to stand up.

Running well, fire is a catalyst. You aren't necessarily the one doing the most, but things happen more easily in rooms you're in. That's genuinely valuable and almost impossible to put in a job description. Under strain, fire over-supplies: you give light to everyone who reaches, then burn out somewhere nobody's looking. The classical phrase is 火炎上, fire rising; in plain terms, you throw yourself in hardest exactly when you most need to stop, because stopping means facing the quiet. So the work isn't moderating your enthusiasm. It's finding one or two steady hearths — people who actually understand what you're making — which does more than a hundred people clapping.
