A Four is avoiding 'I have no identity, I'm no different from anyone', and the compensating strategy is to become the unique one, the one with depth. It's the inward type of the heart centre: a Two's image is given outward, a Three's is success, a Four's is 'not like you'.
At the core of the mechanism is longing and lack: a Four's attention lands automatically on what isn't there — what others have, what was lost, what's far away. That isn't pessimism; it's how this type experiences depth, and flatness feels to a Four like not existing.
Where you'll recognise it: keen for beauty and truth, quickly unable to bear the fake, moods that rise and fall and that you don't much want smoothed, a frequent sense of a missing piece. Running well, a Four is the most creative and honest person around: makes things out of feeling, can walk with someone into places others won't go. Stuck, you sink into the lack — envy, self-pity, pain as identity. Under stress the line runs to Two (people-pleasing, losing yourself); in growth it runs to One (giving feeling discipline and form, actually making it). For a Four, ordinary isn't the enemy. Feeling depth inside an ordinary day is what this type looks like grown up.
