The 20 Maya day signs20 termsMaya Calendar

The twenty day signs of the Tzolk'in are a fixed sequence: each follows the one before, twenty to a round, and paired with the numbers one to thirteen they take 260 days to come full circle. The sign says what kind of force a day carries; its position says where that force comes from and where it goes. Imix, the crocodile, is first — before anything begins there has to be ground. In the Maya creation story the earth floats on the primordial water on the back of a crocodile (or great turtle), and Imix is that back: undifferentiated, nothing grown yet, but already holding.

So Imix's mechanism is bearing: it's the source, the womb, the floor the other nineteen signs stand on. Its imagery is also nourishment — the first waters, the breast, rain.

Where you'll recognise it: you catch people by habit, respond fast to others' needs and slowly to your own, and carry a deep sense that everything starts with you. Running well, you're a group's foundation: steady, containing, letting things begin. Stuck, you're crushed — holding too much, forgetting who holds you, or gripping everything out of a floor-level insecurity. In the sequence Imix is followed by Ik', wind: the ground exists, and next there has to be breath, and speech. Your next step isn't holding more. It's letting things grow out of you.

Ik', wind, is second of the twenty, following Imix the crocodile: the ground exists, and next comes breath. In the Maya creation story the gods make the world by speaking — name a thing and it exists — and Ik' is that breath and that word. Its glyph is a T-shaped window with the wind passing through.

So Ik''s mechanism is transmission: breath, sound, language, inspiration, news, change. Wind's nature is to keep moving, occupy nothing, stay nowhere — it sets things in motion and leaves. That's its power and its difficulty: wind can move anything and hold nothing.

Where you'll recognise it: an idea arrives and you want to say it, you're good at relaying and rousing, you can't sit still, stuffy environments are unbearable, and commitment carries a subtle unease. Running well, you're the breath that brings things alive: bringing the new, dispersing the stagnant, connecting people. Stuck, you're scattered or damaging — talking too fast and too much, worn out by your own motion, or blowing hard enough to topple what shouldn't fall. In the sequence Ik' is followed by Ak'b'al, night: after the wind, quiet. Your next step isn't another gust. It's giving what you said time to land.

Ak'b'al, night, is third of the twenty, following Ik' the wind: after the wind passes, dark falls and it goes quiet. Its glyph is the inside of a house, or a covered face — the Maya grouped night with the house, the body's interior and the underworld: places invisible from outside where things nonetheless grow.

So Ak'b'al's mechanism is interiority and latency: dreams, intuition, the thought not yet spoken, the seed's time in the soil. Its power is in not being seen — people only really think without an audience; and there lies its difficulty too: in the dark anything is possible, fear included.

Where you'll recognise it: clearest alone, a rich inner world, many dreams, discomfort at being watched while you work, a mind that shuts when hurried. Running well, you're the deepest one: thinking things through, feeling layers others don't, able to guide people in the dark. Stuck, the dark eats you — thinking without moving, fear taken for truth, hiding inside and not coming out. In the sequence Ak'b'al is followed by K'an, seed: what the dark incubated must next be held in the hand. Your next step isn't thinking deeper. It's bringing out one thing you thought.

K'an, seed, is fourth of the twenty, following Ak'b'al the night: what the dark incubated is now held in the hand. K'an is also 'maize' and 'ripe, yellow, precious' — for the Maya maize wasn't merely food; people were made from it (the Popol Vuh), so K'an is the raw material of life.

So K'an's mechanism is potential and abundance: a whole tree compressed into one grain, not yet unfolded. Its power is density — a great deal in something small; its difficulty is density too — a seed could be anything, so it isn't anything yet, and held too long it dries out.

Where you'll recognise it: many ideas, excitement at possibility, a slight resistance to picking one, many plans not yet started, unusual sensitivity to both plenty and want. Running well, you're the most productive source around: once planted, you grow more than most. Stuck, you hold and don't plant — collecting possibilities, refusing to decide, or planting so many they fight for soil. In the sequence K'an is followed by Chikchan, the serpent: after the seed goes in, the force that pushes up through the body. Your next step isn't taking another seed. It's choosing one, letting go, and putting it in the ground.

Chikchan, the serpent, is fifth of the twenty, following K'an the seed: after the seed goes in, the force that pushes up through the body. The Maya serpent isn't Eden's — it's life-force (grouped with the spine, with blood, with the lightning of the rainy season), and it's also K'uk'ulkan the feathered serpent, the passage between sky and earth.

So Chikchan's mechanism is instinct and vitality: the body knows first and the head catches up. Its power is directness — no detour, no deliberation, just felt; its difficulty is directness too — instinct is accurate and reasonless, and treating it as evidence goes wrong.

Where you'll recognise it: strong intuition, quick bodily reactions, unexplained likes and dislikes about people that later prove right, energy that swings and swings widely. Running well, you're the most alive: warm, real, magnetic, enough energy to share. Stuck, instinct runs you — impulsive, feeling mistaken for judgement, or a body suppressed until it acts up. In the sequence Chikchan is followed by Kimi, death: after the force peaks comes letting go. Your next step isn't pushing harder. It's knowing when to let this force pass.

Kimi, death, is sixth of the twenty, following Chikchan the serpent: after life-force peaks comes letting go. Its glyph is a head with closed eyes. The Maya view of death differs sharply from the modern one — death is a passage, the ancestors keep participating from the other side, the maize god dies and returns every year; so Kimi is about transformation: one thing ends so another has room.

So Kimi's mechanism is ending and release: closing, letting go, connection to the past, and a particular stillness — the kind that needn't move. Its power is fearlessness: whoever can face an ending is free a step ahead of most; its difficulty is being too early or too cold — others aren't ready and you're already closing.

Where you'll recognise it: unafraid of endings, sensitive to what has run its course, an affinity with the past and the ancestors, calm when others panic. Running well, you're the best at helping people let go: accompanying endings, seeing the transformation, making sure what died actually frees the space. Stuck, you bury early or won't bury — treating the living as finished, or the reverse, clutching the corpse. In the sequence Kimi is followed by Manik', the deer: once you've let go the hands are empty and can work. Your next step isn't ending one more thing. It's catching something new with the freed hands.

Manik', the deer, is seventh of the twenty, following Kimi, death: once you've let go the hands are empty and can work. Its glyph isn't a deer but a hand — thumb and fingers closing in a grasp. The deer was the Maya's most important game and the emblem of the god of the hunt; so Manik' is at once the steady hand and the accurate hunt.

So Manik''s mechanism is feel and completion: through practice, through the body remembering, through making one thing after another. Its power is steadiness — what you make stands; its difficulty is slowness — you can't be fast, and racing sprinters for mileage is a race you lose.

Where you'll recognise it: liking to work with your hands, patience for practice, your own standard for 'done well', a low tolerance for others' sloppiness, needing time but building solid. Running well, you're the most dependable craftsman: making things, finishing them, making them so nobody can take them. Stuck, you grip too hard or move too slow — perfectionism that never ships, or a feel for the old way that refuses the new. In the sequence Manik' is followed by Lamat, the star: what the hand made will next be seen and draw people. Your next step isn't another pass with the file. It's letting the finished thing go out.

Lamat, the star, is eighth of the twenty, following Manik' the deer: what the hand made will next be seen and draw people. Lamat is Venus — the brightest thing before dawn — and the Maya tracked Venus to within a day, tying it to the timing of war and harvest. Its glyph is four dots around a centre, and it also reads as rabbit (fertility) and ripe maize field.

So Lamat's mechanism is multiplication and gathering: things around you increase — friends, chances, possessions, trouble included. Its power is attraction: you needn't try hard for people to come; its difficulty is attraction too: everything comes, and telling what to keep is hard.

Where you'll recognise it: liked, a crowd around you, no shortage of chances and often too many, a natural preference for beauty and plenty, a slight resistance to being alone. Running well, you're the one who brings abundance: things grow around you, you share the good, rooms improve because you're in them. Stuck, the plenty drowns you — accepting everything, keeping everything, quantity mistaken for worth. In the sequence Lamat is followed by Muluk, water: once the star has gathered its fill, feeling rises to the brim. Your next step isn't a little more. It's choosing before it's full.

Muluk, water, is ninth of the twenty, following Lamat the star: after gathering its fill, feeling rises and spills. Its glyph is a circle with a dot inside — a drop of water, a bead of jade. Muluk is offering-water and rain, and it's also jade, the most precious thing the Maya had; it speaks of feeling and of worth at once: what's deep is what's valuable.

So Muluk's mechanism is depth and overflow: you feel more deeply than others and earlier, like a cup filled to the rim that spills at a nudge. Its power is receptivity — you catch what others can't; its difficulty is receptivity too — when you're full, one sentence can wound, yourself included.

Where you'll recognise it: emotion arrives deep, sensitivity to shifts in atmosphere, often knowing something's wrong before others do, needing time to digest, gratitude and indebtedness both felt heavily. Running well, you're the person of greatest emotional depth: able to accompany, to understand, to turn feeling into something of worth — a work, a rite, a bond. Stuck, you spill or you dam — the smallest thing overflows, or to avoid overflowing you feel nothing at all. In the sequence Muluk is followed by Ok, the dog: after the overflow, loyalty and company. Your next step isn't feeling more. It's finding the person who can hold this cup.

Ok, the dog, is tenth of the twenty, following Muluk the water: after the overflow, loyalty and company. The Maya dog has a particular role — it carries the dead across the underworld river as the soul's guide; it's also the animal at home who knows everyone. So Ok is about recognising: your own people, the way home, what's yours to keep.

So Ok's mechanism is loyalty and guidance: you stay longer than most, and people with you have a sense of direction. Its power is dependability — when you're there, people settle; its difficulty is staying too long — the relationship that should have ended, the person no longer worth it, and you're still keeping watch.

Where you'll recognise it: loyal to friends and partners, wounded by betrayal more than most, a strong need to belong, often the one in a group who brings people back, and not much attention on your own needs. Running well, you're the best companion and guide: giving people a home, a direction, one person who won't leave. Stuck, you keep the wrong watch or keep it until there's nothing left of you — loyalty becomes inability to leave, others' paths taken for your own. In the sequence Ok is followed by Chuwen, the monkey: once loyalty stands firm, play and making. Your next step isn't holding tighter. It's allowing yourself a little pleasure that isn't dutiful.

Chuwen, the monkey, is eleventh of the twenty, following Ok the dog: once loyalty stands firm, play and making. The Maya monkey isn't a comic figure — the monkey brothers of the Popol Vuh, Hun B'atz' and Hun Chuwen, are scribes, carvers, painters and musicians, patrons of art and craft. So Chuwen is about creation in its primal form: play — hands on, try it, mess with it, and somewhere in the messing a thing appears.

So Chuwen's mechanism is play and weaving: it joins unrelated things (a monkey swinging tree to tree grabs this branch, then that one) and weaves time into objects. Chuwen is also the midpoint of the Tzolk'in, and among the twenty it governs 'the thread of time'. Its power is fearlessness about trying — you needn't think it through before starting; its difficulty is not finishing — halfway through one game you're off to another.

Where you'll recognise it: curious, itchy-handed, many-talented, a little surprised yourself when the thing comes out, impatient with 'by the book', closing often left to others. Running well, you're the most creative one: turning anything into material, making work fun, producing forms nobody thought of. Stuck, you're scattered or unaccountable — a heap of half-made things, play used as a reason not to answer for anything. In the sequence Chuwen is followed by Eb', the road: when the playing's done, a long road to walk. Your next step isn't opening a new toy. It's picking one and playing it to the end.

Eb', the road, is twelfth of the twenty, following Chuwen the monkey: when the playing's done, a long road to walk. Its glyph is a face with teeth — it also reads 'person', 'grass', 'dew', all things of the ground, daily, walked upon. The Maya white roads, the sakbe, are this word: stone causeways linking cities, laid a stretch at a time, generation after generation.

So Eb''s mechanism is journey and accumulation: not one leap but many steps, many years, many people. Its power is endurance — you go far; its difficulty is slowness — you don't go fast, and since a road is made by walking, the destination isn't visible at the start.

Where you'll recognise it: patient, able to serve without feeling diminished, a natural trust in 'all of us together', a feel for community and lineage, not one to seize the spotlight but reliably present. Running well, you're the one who carries people the furthest: making things last, keeping a group steady, leaving the next generation a road. Stuck, you're walked over — paving so much for others you forget where you were going, or walking so long you forget why you set out. In the sequence Eb' is followed by B'en, the reed: at a certain length a road needs something raised to hold it. Your next step isn't another stretch. It's setting a marker of your own on the road.

B'en, the reed, is thirteenth of the twenty, following Eb' the road: at a certain length a road needs something raised to hold it. Its glyph is a woven mat or a mature maize stalk — the Maya built roofs, wove mats and made staffs from reed and stalk, and the mat (pop) is the word for authority itself; the Popol Vuh's title means 'Book of the Mat'. So B'en is about support and authority: what holds up a roof, what others straighten themselves against.

So B'en's mechanism is structure and leadership: hollow, straight, jointed. Its power is holding — people stand straight beside you; its difficulty is holding too much — a reed holds a roof up, it doesn't carry it, and overloaded it snaps.

Where you'll recognise it: people naturally make you the pillar, responsibility toward home and tradition, an upright bearing, a clear sense of what ought to be done, difficulty showing weakness. Running well, you're the one who holds the room together: giving a group its skeleton, a home its post, shape to what was formless. Stuck, you're rigid or you collapse — holding until you can't bend, or holding until you break. In the sequence B'en is followed by Ix, the jaguar: what has been raised must next learn to wait quietly. Your next step isn't standing straighter. It's handing off some weight, and leaving room to bend.

Ix, the jaguar, is fourteenth of the twenty, following B'en the reed: what has been raised must next learn to wait quietly. The jaguar is the most powerful animal emblem the Maya have: it's the night sun (the sun becomes a jaguar as it travels beneath the earth), the shaman's transformation, the pelt on a ruler's shoulders. All its power is in silence: it passes without sound, and moves only at the exact step.

So Ix's mechanism is latency and precision: not stillness, but every moment before the move spent observing. It's also linked to the earth, the temple, the altar — the spirit of a place. Its power is one strike that lands; its difficulty is waiting too long, or using waiting to avoid facing something.

Where you'll recognise it: quiet, observant, keen intuition, an accurate sense of energy and place, dislike of being made to react instantly, and a way of startling people when you finally move. Running well, you're the one with the most depth: seeing through, able to wait, accurate when you act, reaching levels others can't touch. Stuck, you hide or go cold — latency becomes avoidance, silence becomes distance, power buried until even you can't use it. In the sequence Ix is followed by Men, the eagle: after enough waiting on the ground, rising to see the whole. Your next step isn't waiting a little longer. It's moving once, on the thing you've already seen enough of.

Men, the eagle, is fifteenth of the twenty, following Ix the jaguar: after enough waiting on the ground, rising to see the whole. The jaguar is the night sun; the eagle is the day sun — it flies high, sees far, and sees somewhat coldly. The Maya eagle is linked to warriors, to foresight, and to the moon goddess Ixchel (the word Men carries 'to make, to do', and also names the old woman of the moon).

So Men's mechanism is vantage and height: from above, patterns are clear, direction obvious, small things very small. Its power is foresight — you see now what others see years later; its difficulty is distance — up there, what's at your feet, what's in front of you, the warmth of people, often gets dropped.

Where you'll recognise it: you habitually zoom out, an instinct for the big direction, impatience with detail and chores, a native independence, real pain when confined to a small frame. Running well, you're the one with the longest sight: seeing the whole, showing a group the way, placing today's trouble inside a larger picture. Stuck, you drift or go cold — flying too long without landing, 'the big picture' used to excuse the small tasks, seeing clearly with no one able to follow. In the sequence Men is followed by Kib', the owl: after the day's seeing, seeing in the dark. Your next step isn't flying higher. It's coming down to tell the people on the ground what you saw.

Kib', the owl, is sixteenth of the twenty, following Men the eagle: after the day's seeing, seeing in the dark. The word Kib' is also 'wax' and 'candle' — one point of light in darkness. The Maya grouped the owl with the underworld, with messages from the dead, with ancestral wisdom; and also with forgiveness and purification (some traditions do confession and cleansing on Kib' days).

So Kib''s mechanism is seeing in the dark: reading what's unspoken, what's under the surface, what people don't want seen. Its power is penetration; its difficulty is that others may not be ready to be seen through — and looking at too much darkness pulls you down with it.

Where you'll recognise it: unusually sensitive to what people mean rather than say, often knowing what wasn't said, deep feeling for the past and for guilt, able to quietly hold others' darkness, an old-soul quality. Running well, you're the wisest one: able to forgive, to cleanse, to walk with people through what they daren't look at themselves. Stuck, you sink or you cut — dragged down by the dark you saw, or 'I see through you' used as a weapon. In the sequence Kib' is followed by Kab'an, the earth: after seeing in the dark, back to the ground and slow movement. Your next step isn't looking deeper. It's letting what you saw settle into one concrete act.

Kab'an, the earth, is seventeenth of the twenty, following Kib' the owl: after seeing in the dark, back to the ground and slow movement. Kab'an means 'earth', and also 'earthquake', and also 'knowledge, thought' — put those three together and you have its mechanism: thought is like the crust, still most of the time, and when it moves, the whole plate moves. The Maya linked it to wisdom, to the seasons, to time's deep rhythm.

So Kab'an's mechanism is deep thinking and turning: thinking takes you time because what you're moving isn't the surface but the base; once the base turns, everything above turns with it, and you're hard to talk back. Its power is solidity — your conclusions stand; its difficulty is slowness and hardness — others can't wait, or once turned you can no longer hear.

Where you'll recognise it: thinking needs to steep, deep interest in knowledge and understanding, irritation at being hurried, changing your mind hard but total when it happens, a bond with nature and land. Running well, you're the wisest foundation: thinking things through, standing firm, giving a group ground that won't drift. Stuck, you're rigid or you quake — refusing to move, or held too long and breaking all at once. In the sequence Kab'an is followed by Etz'nab', the flint: after the earth has moved, the cut. Your next step isn't thinking it over again. It's stating the thing you've worked out as one executable sentence.

Etz'nab', the flint, is eighteenth of the twenty, following Kab'an the earth: after the earth has moved, the cut. Its glyph is a flint or obsidian blade — the Maya made weapons, surgery and sacrifice with it, and polished obsidian into mirrors for divination. So Etz'nab' is at once blade and mirror: cutting true from false, showing what's there.

So Etz'nab''s mechanism is discernment and severance: one stroke, and the cut face is clean. Its power is clarity — you can tell what's real; its difficulty is slack — some relationships, some stages, need not clarity but not-yet.

Where you'll recognise it: sensitive to falseness, direct in speech, able to name the point in one sentence amid chaos, unable to bear fudging, and the occasional discovery afterward that you cut too fast. Running well, you're the most honest mirror: letting people see what's so, separating what was tangled, making the call others daren't. Stuck, you wound or go cold — cutting for the sake of it, honesty used as licence not to be gentle, and finding after the cut that you're on the far side of it too. In the sequence Etz'nab' is followed by Kawak, the storm: after the cut, release and cleansing. Your next step isn't another cut. It's giving what's already cut time to grow back.

Kawak, the storm, is nineteenth of the twenty, following Etz'nab' the flint: after the cut, release and cleansing. Kawak is the day of Chaak the rain god — lightning, thunder, downpour; for a people who lived by rain it was the most awaited and most feared force there was: too little and drought, too much and ruin. Its glyph is cloud and raindrops.

So Kawak's mechanism is build-up and release: closed in for a long time, then it comes without notice; fast to arrive, fast to pass, and the air is clean afterward. Its power is cleansing — one storm clears what was pressed down; its difficulty is control — often you don't know yourself when it's going to break.

Where you'll recognise it: feeling has a build-up phase and a break, you're fine soon after the break while the people beside you aren't yet, suppressive environments are unbearable, you have a knack for making things 'go through' and often frighten people while doing it. Running well, you're the one who brings freshness: opening what was closed, washing away the false; the ground after the rain is your gift. Stuck, you wound or you parch — the rain falls on the wrong person, or to keep it from falling you dam yourself dry. In the sequence Kawak is followed by Ajaw, the lord sun: after the rain, the light of noon and the completion of a round. Your next step isn't another storm. It's seeing, once it clears, what the rain actually washed out.

Ajaw, the lord sun, is twentieth and last of the twenty, following Kawak the storm: after the rain, the light of noon and the completion of a round. Ajaw is 'lord' — the title of Maya rulers is this word — and the name of the sun god K'inich Ajaw, and the father of the Hero Twins. Its glyph is a face, the most human of all the day signs. So Ajaw is about completion and illumination: after walking the other nineteen, standing at noon and lighting the whole day.

So Ajaw's mechanism is centre and fullness: where you are grows quiet, ordered, lit. Its power is light — you let others see; its difficulty is weight — your presence carries, and that isn't privilege but responsibility, and it makes rest hard.

Where you'll recognise it: people naturally make you the centre, you hold yourself to a high standard of 'complete', you feel honour and the right thing keenly, being watched steadies rather than shakes you, and few people ask whether you're tired. Running well, you're the one who lights others best: giving a group a centre, a scale, light to stand in. Stuck, you scorch or you empty — so bright you push people away, or all the light given out and nothing left inside. In the sequence Ajaw is followed by Imix again, the crocodile: after completion, everything starts over from the lowest ground. Your next step isn't shining brighter. It's ending this round well, and allowing yourself to return to where nothing is lit yet.
