The 27 nakshatras27 termsVedic Astrology · Jyotisha

The twenty-seven nakshatras divide the zodiac into equal 13°20′ segments, and that number comes from the Moon: it circles the sky in about 27.3 days, roughly one segment a day. Your nakshatra is the one the Moon stood in at your birth, and in Jyotisha it does something very practical besides: the Vimshottari daśā periods are counted from the ruler of that nakshatra — the timetable of a whole life is dealt from here.

Ashwini is the first, ruled by Ketu. Its symbol is a horse's head and its deity the Aśvins, the twin physicians of the Vedas — the two called on in the hymns for emergency rescue: setting a severed leg, restoring an old man's youth, pulling the drowning from the water. Ketu as ruler plus that deity gives the character: fast, undeliberating, unattached (Ketu is the end of the axis that doesn't cling), with the force concentrated in the first stretch.

Where you'll recognise it: quicker off the mark than others, strong response to the new, patience spent on beginnings rather than endings, good physical recovery, low tolerance for 'still discussing'. Running well, you're the best starter there is: moving what was stalled, doing the right thing in the first chaotic minute, giving people a beginning. Stuck, you're only beginnings — switching too fast, things half done, speed treated as the answer. After the first comes Bharani: having bolted, you have to learn to carry.

Bharani is the second, ruled by Venus, its symbol the yoni — the shape of the womb — and its deity Yama. Put those three together and you have its mechanism: able to carry, and knowing when a thing should end. Venus governs gestation and enjoyment, Yama death and law; one says bearing, the other says limit, and birth itself is both — carrying takes time, and when the time comes it has to come out, and not delivering is dangerous.

So Bharani is about limit and transformation: the most enduring of the twenty-seven, and the one that most has to learn endings. The tradition links it to bearing (bharaṇa means 'to carry') and to the passage between life and death.

Where you'll recognise it: able to hold what others can't, a feel for taboo and for edges, desire and self-restraint both strong, often waiting for a time to arrive, and letting go harder than taking on. Running well, you have the greatest carrying capacity there is: seeing something through from nothing, facing what others won't, staying clear at the edge. Stuck, you carry too long — holding in what should be delivered, endurance mistaken for virtue, or the reverse: destroying instead of ending. Before it is Ashwini's bolt, after it Krittika's fire: what has been carried must next go through the burning.

Krittika is the third, ruled by the Sun, its symbol a razor or a flame, its deity Agni, god of fire. It's also the Pleiades — in the Vedic story the six mothers who raised the war god Kārttikeya, from whom the name comes. So Krittika is fire and blade, and also wet-nurse: burn off, cut away, then raise what remains.

Mechanically the Sun as ruler matters here: the Sun is illumination and purity, and fire is the tool of transformation. The character of this nakshatra is separation — pure from impure. Sacrificial fire consumes the offering and sends it up; kitchen fire turns raw into cooked; the razor takes off what should go. All three are one thing: it's through fire that something becomes usable.

Where you'll recognise it: you see what's wrong, you speak directly and accurately, you hold a standard for quality, you have no patience for murk or pretence, and there's a clarity about you that draws respect and a little fear. Running well, you're the best refiner: making things pure, pushing people to the level they should be at, cutting the useless. Stuck, you burn too hot — criticising everything, sharpness mistaken for honesty, burning away the very thing you meant to raise. Bharani before it carries; Rohini after it grows: only after the burning is the ground clean enough to plant.

Rohini is the fourth, ruled by the Moon, its symbol a loaded ox-cart, its deity Prajāpati the creator (later identified with Brahmā). It's where the Moon is strongest — the Moon's exaltation in Taurus falls in this nakshatra — so the tradition calls Rohini the Moon's favourite wife, a story that is really astronomy: here the Moon is brightest, fullest, most nourishing.

Mechanically, the Moon governs nourishment and feeling, Prajāpati creation and fertility, and the cart is literal load-bearing. Together: growing a thing from seed to form, until the cart is full. This nakshatra's power isn't speed, it's that things actually grow — crops, work, relationships and wealth are all the same capacity.

Where you'll recognise it: a strong feel for beauty and comfort, an ability to grow things to term, patience for ripening, deep investment in what you love, and a tendency to hold it too tightly. Running well, you're the one who can raise anything: a body of work, a team, a bond — slowly, and it really does grow. Stuck, you possess or indulge — unable to release what you raised, too fond of comfort, abundance mistaken for safety. Krittika before it burned; Mrigashira after it starts searching: once full, a person wants to go out and see what else there is.

Mrigashira is the fifth, ruled by Mars, its symbol a deer's head, its deity Soma. The name means exactly that — deer's head: the animal lifts its face and the nose moves first. It's searching, and searching by sense.

Mechanically Mars supplies initiative and pursuit, Soma the nectar, the moon, the thing worth wanting. Together: pursuing a soft target — not conquest but scenting, circling, closing gradually. Hence curiosity and exploration: in the Vedic story Soma is the nectar the gods themselves chase, and the chasing is the shape of this nakshatra.

Where you'll recognise it: strong interest in the new, many questions, keen senses, easily drawn by a better option, and a marked response to travel and changes of place. Running well, you're the best explorer: finding what others can't, bringing the good things back, showing the people around you more possibility. Stuck, you search forever — new job, new relationship, new city, and nothing carried deep; or having found it, doubting whether something better was missed. Rohini before it is fullness; Ardra after it is the thunderstorm: search long enough and you run into something that wakes you.

Ardra is the sixth, ruled by Rahu, its symbol a teardrop (sometimes a human head), its deity Rudra — the Vedic storm god who later becomes Shiva. The name means 'moist'.

Mechanically Rahu is magnification and obsession, Rudra the howl and the thunderstorm. Together: intensity. This nakshatra pushes feeling to its limit and at the limit breaks something open. In the hymns Rudra brings both disease and medicine, and that doubleness isn't a contradiction — the same rain ruins a field or saves it, and the difference is how long it falls. So Ardra is about the clarity on the far side of a storm: tears are water too, and what's been washed is clean.

Where you'll recognise it: high emotional intensity, a sharp understanding of pain, willing to say what others won't, clearer in a crisis than out of one, and often cleaning up afterwards for what you said. Running well, you're the one who penetrates: seeing people's pain, shattering the false, finding what's real in the mess. Stuck, intensity carries you off — destruction in place of expression, pain mistaken for depth, or living inside the storm and refusing to come out. Mrigashira before it searches; Punarvasu after it comes home: once the thunder has passed, a person needs somewhere to return.

Punarvasu is the seventh, ruled by Jupiter, its symbol a quiver (the arrow shot returns), its deity Aditi — 'the boundless', mother of the gods. The name punar-vasu means 'good again, dwelling again'.

Mechanically Jupiter is expansion, wisdom and merit; Aditi is the limitless maternal container. Together: resilience. The character of this nakshatra is that things can come round again — what was lost returns, what broke can be mended, whoever left can come home. It's the widest of the twenty-seven, because Aditi means unbounded to begin with.

Where you'll recognise it: quick recovery after a fall, tolerance toward people, readiness to forgive, a strong concern with home and belonging, and a willingness to give second chances. Running well, you're the one who lets people begin again: bringing hope, keeping the failed from feeling finished, gathering back what scattered. Stuck, you're too wide — second chances handed to those who shouldn't have them, or letting go too early because you know it comes back. Ardra before it storms; Pushya after it feeds: once home, the next thing is being fed properly.

Pushya is the eighth, ruled by Saturn, its symbol a cow's udder (also a flower, also a circle), its deity Bṛhaspati, teacher of the gods. The tradition rates it the most auspicious of the twenty-seven, and not for luck: it holds nourishment and discipline at once — Bṛhaspati is wisdom and teaching, Saturn responsibility and time.

So Pushya's mechanism is nourishment with rules: the name means 'to feed, to make flourish'. Feeding someone isn't giving them what they like, it's giving them what they can grow on — a teacher's way of feeding, and Saturn's: slow, steady, ruled, long-term. Hence its reputation as the best segment for starting anything meant to last.

Where you'll recognise it: caring for people by nature, a heavy sense of duty, clarity about what ought to be done, difficulty putting your own needs first, difficulty refusing. Running well, you're the most reliable nourisher: a group properly looked after, order in things, people willing to grow alongside you. Stuck, it's all outflow — self-sacrifice, care as your source of worth, or care used to control. Punarvasu before it comes home; Ashlesha after it coils: the next lesson after feeding is seeing the line between caring and holding on.

Ashlesha is the ninth, ruled by Mercury, its symbol a coiled serpent, its deity the Nāgas. The name means 'entwining, embracing' — the word itself is both holding and constricting.

Mechanically Mercury is discernment and mind; the Nāgas are the serpent people of the underworld, who in the tradition guard treasure and secret knowledge and carry venom. Together: penetration. This nakshatra sees what's under the surface — motive, the unsaid, the real mechanics of a relationship. And whoever sees that has two roads open: understanding, or leverage. The tradition's mixed verdict on this segment comes from exactly there: the capacity is neutral, the use of it isn't.

Where you'll recognise it: you read people accurately, you're sensitive to what's beneath an atmosphere, you're hard to deceive, you know how to influence, and your distance from people is either very close or very far. Running well, you're the deepest understander: reading what wasn't said, healing others' dark places, keeping a secret properly. Stuck, you entwine — insight used to manoeuvre, intimacy turned into control, or seeing so clearly that you trust no one. Pushya before it feeds; Magha after it is the throne: having seen into people, what comes next is facing where you came from.

Magha is the tenth, ruled by Ketu, its symbol a throne (also a palanquin), its deity the Pitṛs, the ancestors. The name means 'great, abundant'.

Mechanically Ketu releases backward and carries what came from before; the Pitṛs are the dead who went ahead of you — so this segment's power wasn't earned by you, it was handed down. The throne is an honest symbol: the seat is empty, many have sat in it, and its weight comes from those who did. So Magha is about lineage and position: family, blood, standing, and how heavily 'whose descendant am I' sits on you.

Where you'll recognise it: deep feeling for family and origin, care about dignity and appearances, being expected of and expecting of yourself, strong attitudes toward elders and tradition (close or resistant, but strong), and 'relax' as a difficult word. Running well, you carry the most weight: able to inherit, to represent, to give a group belonging and honour. Stuck, the throne crushes you — living inside others' expectations, a title standing in for a self, or throwing out the roots along with the tradition you were rejecting. Ashlesha before it sees into people; Purva Phalguni after it enjoys: having taken the seat, you have to learn to live well in it too.

Purva Phalguni is the eleventh, ruled by Venus, its symbol the front legs of a bed, its deity Bhaga — the Vedic god who apportions fortune and wealth (bhaga means 'share').

Mechanically Venus is pleasure, art and love; Bhaga is the portion allotted to you. The front legs of the bed are the end you lie down on: rest, intimacy, play, being loved. This nakshatra's function among the twenty-seven is unambiguous — it's where recovery happens. Magha before it took on the weight of the throne; here the weight goes down for a while, and without that stretch the position drains a person dry.

Where you'll recognise it: you put people at ease, you have charm, a gift for beauty and pleasure, generosity, a habit of postponing what's due, and a keen concern for the warmth in a relationship. Running well, you're the most comfortable person to be around: warming a room, making people want to stay, giving days some flavour. Stuck, you indulge or drift — pleasure as avoidance, good days that go nowhere, or the reverse: too guilty to rest at all. Uttara Phalguni follows: after lying down comes the half that keeps its word.

Uttara Phalguni is the twelfth, ruled by the Sun, its symbol the back legs of the same bed, its deity Aryaman — god of contracts, marriage and patronage.

Mechanically it's the other end of the previous nakshatra's bed: Purva is lying down (enjoyment), Uttara is the legs holding it up (commitment). The Sun as ruler supplies steady light and responsibility; Aryaman supplies 'what was agreed counts'. So this segment is about turning a relationship into an institution: marriage, partnership, long-term care — not the passionate stretch but the stretch that's still there once the passion has passed.

Where you'll recognise it: you do what you said, people treat you as their backing, you take promises seriously, you help without keeping score, you find betrayal especially hard to bear, and other people's business often comes before your own. Running well, you're the most trustworthy: giving people security, holding relationships and organisations up, generous without display. Stuck, you're drained — carrying too much, unable to say no, or using 'I promised' to hold down a view of yours that has actually changed. Before it the bed's other end; after it Hasta, the hand: once you're holding things up, the hand has to make something.

Hasta is the thirteenth, ruled by the Moon, its symbol an open hand, its deity Savitṛ — the impeller, the Sun in its aspect of setting everything in motion (the famous Gāyatrī mantra is addressed to him).

Mechanically the Moon is mind and feeling, Savitṛ is impulse and realisation, and the hand is the junction between them: what you thought of only exists once a hand has been through it. The name hasta simply means 'hand'. A hand works, heals, performs sleight, and takes things away — so this nakshatra's character is skill itself: neutral, highly effective, its products visible and its process not.

Where you'll recognise it: deft hands, fast at learning technique, strong ability to make a problem go away, attention to detail, an urge to tidy disorder, and an occasional habit of routing around trouble with skill rather than solving it. Running well, you're the best at turning thought into object: you make it, you fix it, you land the abstract. Stuck, only the technique is left — sleight where honesty was needed, or work so smooth nobody knows how hard it was. Uttara Phalguni before it keeps its word; Chitra after it is the jewel: once the hand is fluent, it has to make something worth looking at.

Chitra is the fourteenth, ruled by Mars, its symbol a brilliant jewel, its deity Tvaṣṭṛ or Viśvakarman — the celestial artisan who made the gods' weapons and palaces. The name means 'bright, many-coloured, wrought'.

Mechanically Mars supplies precision and force, Viśvakarman the capacity to design. The jewel is the key image: a gem's brilliance isn't something it grew — someone cut it, facet by facet, and everything between rough stone and finished stone is labour. So this nakshatra is about the making of form and beauty: architecture, design, the visual, the body, any shape meant to be seen.

Where you'll recognise it: sensitivity to shape and proportion, care about presentation, a distinct personal style, an ability to make things look right, susceptibility to appearances in your judgements, and no tolerance for the crude. Running well, you're the most aesthetic maker: things both usable and beautiful, memorable at a glance, chaos given form. Stuck, only the surface remains — overworked for effect, image standing in for substance, or hiding the work because it can't be made perfect. Hasta before it is the hand; Swati after it is grass in the wind: having made something beautiful, the next lesson is not to be bound by it.

Swati is the fifteenth, ruled by Rahu, its symbol a young shoot standing alone in the wind (also coral), its deity Vāyu, god of wind. The name carries 'independent, self-going'.

Mechanically Rahu goes outward into the unfamiliar; Vāyu moves without occupying. The image of grass in wind is exact: it bends very low and doesn't break — because it isn't rigid, and because its roots are its own single clump. So this nakshatra is about independence and resilience: held up not by structure but by an ability to bend; and about trade and circulation too (wind carries things about), which is why the tradition puts commerce and diplomacy here.

Where you'll recognise it: dislike of being tied, high adaptability, self-reliance, more sensitivity to freedom than to safety, ease at moving between people, and difficulty staying where staying is required. Running well, you're the freest and toughest: not crushable, able to move, able to grow something in any environment. Stuck, you drift — refusing to root, independence turned into keeping everyone at arm's length, or the wind dropping and no reason left to stay. Chitra before it is the jewel; Vishakha after it the triumphal arch: after a round of drifting comes a goal worth stopping for.

Vishakha is the sixteenth, ruled by Jupiter, its symbol a triumphal archway (also a forked branch), its deity Indrāgnī — Indra and Agni as one, victory and fire together. The name means 'forked'.

Mechanically Jupiter is expansion and meaning, Indra is victory, Agni turns things into energy. Together: burning toward one goal. The fork is the key action of this segment — two branches ahead, choose one, and put the whole fire into it. The arch is what choosing rightly looks like; not choosing, or choosing and turning back, scatters the fire.

Where you'll recognise it: a strong sense of goal, long endurance for one thing, appetite for achievement, frightening focus, a certain emptiness after arriving, and a tendency to stall when you want both branches. Running well, you're the most persistent: once set, you go to the end, you finish long things, people want to push alongside you. Stuck, the goal eats you — the process lost to the getting, no next thing after arrival, or standing at the fork so long both sides go cold. Swati before it is the wind; Anuradha after it is companions: after a round of pushing you find that winning alone isn't as interesting.

Anuradha is the seventeenth, ruled by Saturn, its symbol a lotus (the flower that opens out of mud), its deity Mitra — god of friendship and covenant (the word mitra simply means 'friend').

Mechanically Saturn is discipline, time and difficulty; Mitra is relationship held together by agreement. The lotus joins them: this segment's power is flowering in hard soil, and what makes the flowering possible is company. Saturn's difficulty is real, and Mitra's remedy is equally real — you don't get through on your own, you get through with people willing to be bound to you.

Where you'll recognise it: friends grow around you wherever you go, you take loyalty and promises seriously, you can stay in a hard environment, you have a gift for group dynamics, and carrying alone costs you unusually much. Running well, you're the best at holding people together: joining unlike people, keeping morale through difficulty, giving an organisation a centre. Stuck, you grit — doing everything yourself, needing people treated as weakness, or swallowing what shouldn't be swallowed to keep a relationship. Vishakha before it pushes; Jyeshtha after it is the eldest: with companions in place, the next thing is being pushed to the front.

Jyeshtha is the eighteenth, ruled by Mercury, its symbol an umbrella (also a talisman, also an earring), its deity Indra — king of the gods, slayer of the great serpent. The name means 'the eldest, the greatest'.

Mechanically Mercury is mind and discernment, Indra is power and command, and the umbrella shields someone else. Together they give this segment's situation: you're the one who's responsible, and usually not by choice — eldest child, senior, the most capable one; the position comes and finds you. Indra's myth carries the other half too: he wins, and he's proud, and he loses his throne at least once. That's this segment's challenge.

Where you'll recognise it: habitually the eldest in the room, able to bear, fast to take responsibility, slow to ask for help, capable and aware of being capable, and occasionally pulling rank. Running well, you're the best protector: standing in front, taking the hard part, giving others an umbrella to stand under. Stuck, you grit or you swell — carrying everything until you break, or protection turned into control. Anuradha before it gives companions; Mula after it pulls up the root: past a certain point of holding, a moment comes when the whole root gets dug up and looked at.

Mula is the nineteenth, ruled by Ketu, its symbol a clump of roots torn from the ground, its deity Nirṛti — goddess of dissolution. The name means 'root'. It lies toward the galactic centre, and the tradition treats it as the segment that goes to the source.

Mechanically Ketu severs and releases; Nirṛti unmakes structure. Together: following a thing to the bottom — not destruction for its own sake, but the fact that seeing a root requires turning over the soil. So people of this segment have no patience with the surface account: they want to know how it actually is, and that digging pulls up things that were standing perfectly well.

Where you'll recognise it: unsettled until you've reached the bottom, intolerant of pretence and fobbing off, a few complete restarts behind you, drawn to philosophy or depth psychology, and occasionally pulling yourself up by the roots as well. Running well, you're the best at finding root causes: still looking at the cause while others circle the symptom, able to sit with someone in the deepest layer. Stuck, you pull up too much — digging out what was still growing, 'I'm after the truth' as licence to dismantle, or never rebuilding after the dig. Jyeshtha before it holds the umbrella; Purva Ashadha after it is rising water: once the root is out, the force that grows back up.

Purva Ashadha is the twentieth, ruled by Venus, its symbol a fan (also a winnowing basket, also a tusk), its deity Āpas — the waters. The name means 'the earlier, the invincible'.

Mechanically Venus is attraction and persuasion; Āpas is water. Together: water's way of winning — no head-on collision and no retreat either; when it rises you can't stop it, because there's no point to push back against. So this segment is about unyieldingness and persuasion: people end up convinced rather than overpowered, by persistence rather than force.

Where you'll recognise it: hard to talk round, a quiet confidence, skilled at bringing people to your view, high resilience under setback, rarely conceding error, and a natural interest in cleansing and starting over. Running well, you're the most persuasive and the most durable: carrying people with you, outlasting a long fight, letting an idea become consensus. Stuck, you hold out until you can't hear — persistence hardened into never revising, charm used to route around the objection you should face. Mula before it digs the root; Uttara Ashadha after it is the tusk: after rising water comes the slow growth that doesn't snap.

Uttara Ashadha is the twenty-first, ruled by the Sun, its symbol a tusk (also the back legs of a bed), its deity the Viśvedevāḥ — the all-gods, the assembled company. The name means 'the later, the invincible'.

Mechanically the Sun gives light that is continuous rather than glaring; the Viśvedevāḥ give agreement from everyone. The tusk is an exact image: it grows extremely slowly, and once grown it doesn't break. This segment's victories are that kind — not seized but grown, and so not taken back. The tradition holds it right for starting what's meant to last a lifetime.

Where you'll recognise it: strong endurance, clear principles, winning in the second half, care about legitimacy (an unclean win sits badly with you), most vulnerable when you rush the result, and routinely underestimated before you overtake. Running well, you're the most enduring: doing long things, building what can be handed on, winning people's genuine consent. Stuck, you're hard and slow — refusing to adjust, principle stiffened into rigidity, or missing the moment because winning the right way mattered more. Purva Ashadha before it rises; Shravana after it is the ear: once grown, the next thing is learning to listen.

Shravana is the twenty-second, ruled by the Moon, its symbol an ear (also three footprints), its deity Viṣṇu — who crossed the three worlds in three strides. The name simply means 'hearing'.

Mechanically the Moon receives; Viṣṇu maintains and pervades. Together: connection through listening. The Vedic tradition calls its highest knowledge śruti, 'that which was heard' — the scriptures weren't written down, they were heard, generation to generation. So this segment's power isn't in speaking but in hearing correctly: hearing what someone actually means, hearing what a field's real rules are, and passing it on. The three footprints say the same thing: getting from one place to another starts with hearing the route clearly.

Where you'll recognise it: people want to talk to you, you listen well and remember, you learn faster by ear than by page, you're sensitive to sound and tone, you become everyone's confidant, and you fill up easily with what isn't yours. Running well, you're the best receiver and transmitter: understanding accurately, taking knowledge on, making people feel heard. Stuck, you overflow — everything let in, dragged along by noise, or listening so exclusively that nobody knows what you want. Uttara Ashadha before it grows; Dhanishta after it is the drum: having heard clearly, you beat your own rhythm.

Dhanishta is the twenty-third, ruled by Mars, its symbol a drum (Shiva's ḍamaru), its deity the eight Vasus, gods of dwelling and abundance. The name means 'the wealthiest'.

Mechanically Mars supplies the force of the beat, the Vasus supply abundance. The drum is the key: Shiva's drum beats out time itself — once a rhythm starts, scattered things fall into line. So this segment is about the capacity to synchronise a group, and abundance is the consequence of synchrony rather than its cause. People on one beat produce far more than the same people each on their own.

Where you'll recognise it: a sense of rhythm (in music, sport or work alike), a gift for lifting the mood, influence within a group, a need for something to be moving, low tolerance for stagnation, and a practical feel for wealth and resource. Running well, you're the one who sets the tempo: getting people moving, getting resource circulating, giving things life. Stuck, you can't stop — busyness in place of direction, rhythm mistaken for worth, panic in the quiet. Shravana before it listens; Shatabhisha after it is the empty circle: past a certain amount of noise, you need a place with nobody in it.

Shatabhisha is the twenty-fourth, ruled by Rahu, its symbol an empty circle (also a hundred flowers, a hundred stars), its deity Varuṇa — god of the cosmic waters and of law. The name means 'a hundred healers'.

Mechanically Rahu is the unorthodox and the breakthrough; Varuṇa is the invisible order that governs everything (he binds law-breakers with his noose). Together: seeing the hidden rule and repairing according to it. The hundred healers isn't a crowd coming to save you — it names what this segment handles: the things that take a hundred methods to cure, the difficult, the concealed, the systemic. The circle is a boundary: repair needs an enclosed space.

Where you'll recognise it: a real need for solitude, interest in hidden regularities (science, systems, the esoteric alike), strong healing capacity, hard to get close to, a distance from groups, and a habit of still researching where others gave up. Running well, you're the great repairer: locating the lesion, handling what others can't, going deep inside your own circle. Stuck, you seal up — walls too high, independence turned to isolation, or carrying so much alone that nobody knows you're struggling. Dhanishta before it drums; Purva Bhadrapada after it is fire in the dark: shut in and mending long enough, something fierce catches light inside.

Purva Bhadrapada is the twenty-fifth, ruled by Jupiter, its symbol fire in a dark place (also a funeral pyre, also the front legs of a bed), its deity Aja Ekapāda — 'the unborn one-footed', an old Vedic figure linked to fire, lightning and Shiva.

Mechanically Jupiter is meaning and expansion; Aja Ekapāda is the fire that stands up out of the ground. Together: burning for something larger. This segment's intensity isn't temper, it's passion that has found an object beyond itself — an ideal, a faith, an art, a truth. The single foot describes the method: one point of support, so it stands at an extreme, and imbalance is its characteristic rather than its defect.

Where you'll recognise it: extremely high temperature when committed, no patience for worldly moderation, interest in the mystical and the outer edge, conversation that suddenly goes deep, people beside you not always able to take the heat, and possibly one burnt-out trough behind you. Running well, you're the most contagious: setting people alight, spending yourself on an ideal, seeing levels others can't. Stuck, the fire runs loose — heedless, extremity mistaken for sincerity, or entirely hollow after the burn. Shatabhisha before it shuts the door; Uttara Bhadrapada after it is the still serpent in deep water: after the fire, the quiet that settles to the bottom.

Uttara Bhadrapada is the twenty-sixth, ruled by Saturn, its symbol a serpent in the deep water (also the back legs of a bed), its deity Ahir Budhnya — the serpent of the depths, coiled and unmoving on the ocean floor.

Mechanically Saturn is time, endurance and depth; Ahir Budhnya sinks to the bottom, coils, and doesn't move. It answers the previous nakshatra exactly: Purva is fire going up, Uttara is water going down; two ends of the same bed, one passion and one the wisdom left after passion settles. So this segment is about quiet depth: nothing to prove, no need to move, and something down there all the same.

Where you'll recognise it: steady emotions, people settling in your presence, a natural link to deep things (dreams, the unconscious, the spiritual), rarely asking for anything, a gravity beyond your years, and being treated as the one who doesn't need looking after. Running well, you're the one who steadies a room: calming the anxious, taking others' weight, unmoved in chaos. Stuck, you sink too deep — not expressing, not asking, yielding mistaken for compassion, or so quiet that people forget to ask how you are. Purva Bhadrapada before it burns; Revati after it is the guiding fish: once it has settled enough, the next thing is leading people back to shore.

Revati is the twenty-seventh and last, ruled by Mercury, its symbol a fish (also a drum), its deity Pūṣan — protector of travellers, guide of roads, finder of lost cattle, the one who conducts souls where they're going. The name means 'abundant'.

Mechanically Mercury is mind and conveyance; Pūṣan is the guide. Together: delivery. This is the last of the twenty-seven, and the last one's work isn't ending, it's handing people on to the next stretch. The fish guiding in the water is exact — it doesn't come ashore itself, it brings the lost ashore. So the tradition links this segment to compassion, to completed journeys, to transition; and it's the softest of the twenty-seven, because whoever escorts people can't be hard.

Where you'll recognise it: gentleness with people, often a transitional figure in others' lives (they pass through you and go on), feeling for animals and for the small, a sense of completion mixed with wistfulness, and real difficulty knowing where you yourself should stop. Running well, you're the best guide: bringing people to the right place, making transitions less painful, giving a gentle ending. Stuck, you give until you're hollow — everyone delivered and you still in the water, or unable to let people go because you can't bear it. After this one comes Ashwini again: the round of twenty-seven closes, the Moon returns to the start, and someone else's first step begins here.
