Five Yellow (五黃殺) · Dark Sword (暗剣殺) · Your own star sits here (本命殺) · Opposite your star (本命的殺) · Year break (歳破) · Month break (月破) · Supportive element (相生)
Every term in Compass terms, in two plain sentences — what it is and what it means for you — and the one thing people most often get wrong about it.

Sign in and make a profile: twenty-four systems read your birth data, and every word they print — this one included — is explained where it appears, with which traditions agree.
Five Yellow is the only one of the nine stars with no fixed direction — it sits in the centre and only lands on a compass point as the Lo Shu grid rotates each year and month. That explains its nature: it's the centre's force placed out on the edge, and wherever an amplifier lands, both the good and the bad on that side get amplified.
So the traditional caution about its direction isn't that something evil is there. It's that the variance in that direction is unusually wide. Wide variance is a risk to something already stable and not necessarily to something that was going to change anyway — which is why the advice differs between a short trip and a relocation.
The practical reading treats it as a volatility indicator rather than a prohibition: outcomes in that direction are spread wider than usual. Whether to go depends on whether what you're doing can take a wider spread.
Dark Sword is by definition the direction opposite Five Yellow, and that definition is the whole of its meaning. In the logic of 気学, a force placed on one direction necessarily leaves a matching gap opposite — the harder you face one way, the less guarded your back is.
So the tradition describes it as a blade from behind. The point of that image isn't fear, it's the direction of attention: the trouble doesn't come from where you're already looking, it comes from the side you aren't.
The most useful part of this caution has nothing to do with compass points. Any time you're heavily invested in one direction, the question worth asking is what you've stopped watching. The compass simply pins that piece of common sense to a specific bearing so it can be checked.
本命殺 is the most counter-intuitive rule in 九星氣学: moving towards the direction your own star occupies is held to be unfavourable. The reason isn't luck, it's room.
The compass judges what happens when your particular energy goes somewhere. Travelling into your own star stacks the same energy in the same place — no complement, and no gap for anything to develop in. It's the same logic as 比劫 in the five elements: meeting your own kind isn't help, it's sharing the same plate.
So the practical sense of it is not seeking a breakthrough somewhere identical to yourself. It runs against instinct — uncertainty makes people want the environment most like them — and the rule says that place is the safest and the emptiest of anything new. Here, safety and growth don't point the same way.
本命的殺 is directly opposite where your birth star sits. It and 本命殺 are two ends of one pairing rather than two independent rules — a point most simplified accounts drop.
Oppositions in this system come in pairs: Five Yellow with Dark Sword, and your own star with its opposite. The difference is that the first pair is the same for everybody and the second is yours alone. So the dial carries two layers at once: one the year hands to everyone, one that belongs only to you.
The use of this rule is that it separates the personal from the public. The same bearing can carry completely different advice for you and for someone else — which is why copying another person's direction chart is pointless. Their chart is missing your layer.
歲破 is defined purely by the calendar: whichever direction this year's branch occupies, the one opposite it is 歲破. 2026 is a 丙午 year, 午 is due south, so 歲破 is due north. It has nothing to do with the nine stars — it's a separate layer of rule drawn on the same dial.
Opposition appears everywhere in the Chinese calendar: branches six apart oppose, meaning two forces meeting head-on. Meeting head-on isn't destruction, it's cancellation — effort spent in the opposed direction has part of itself eaten.
So 歲破 means a loss of efficiency rather than a catastrophe. The longer the horizon, the more the loss accumulates, which is exactly why it registers on a house move and not on a business trip. Once you see the mechanism, the rule turns out to be quite mild.
月破 is the same mechanism as 歲破 on a finer scale: whichever direction this month's branch occupies, the opposite is 月破. So the whole rule is one principle applied at three time scales — year, month, and the finer 日破.
That structure is useful, because it makes timing discriminable. If something is only caught by the month, the fix might be a different week; if it's caught by the year, a different week won't do and you need a different season or a different direction. The same dial, two scales, different advice.
So the practical way to read the compass isn't asking whether a bearing is good. It's asking which layer is talking. The year's layer answers in quarters and the month's in weeks — match the scale and the system becomes usable.
The supportive bearing applies the five-element cycle to direction: the star sitting there this period is of an element that feeds your birth star. Feeding means supply — not that it does the work for you, but that the work costs less.
Its standing within the dial is worth noticing: six of the seven reasons are cautions and only this one is a yes. That isn't pessimism in the system, it's a conservative design — 気学 exists to avoid waste rather than to find shortcuts. So when it does say yes, that yes carries more weight than the usual auspicious label.
The practical use is ranking rather than verdict: given several options, prefer the one with support. A bearing without it isn't forbidden — it just means the extra effort comes out of you.
Nine Star Ki: nine stars cycling through years, months and directions — timing and movement.
A word is a way in. What it means for you shows up on your own chart.
