Finding the directions

Stand at the centre of the home (or the room) and use your phone's compass.
Step a metre away from walls, the fridge and big appliances, and take two or three readings.
If your compass is set to true north, switch it to magnetic: feng shui uses magnetic north.
This page uses 45° palaces; the compass page (for travel) uses Nine Star Ki's 30°/60° cut. They are two traditions' ways of dividing the circle.

How the chart is made

The nine stars move one step each year, changing at Lichun. This year 9 Purple Fire takes the centre and the other eight follow the Lo Shu order — the same chart Nine Star Ki uses for the year.

Quiet or use-often follows the Zibai Jue: 1 White, 6 White, 8 White, 4 Green and 9 Purple are the good stars; 2 Black, 3 Jade, 5 Yellow and 7 Red are the ones to keep quiet.

What to place follows the five elements: for a quiet star, place the element it produces, which slowly draws its force away; for a good star, place the element that produces it. Never the element that attacks it — that stirs it up. The objects themselves vary by school; these are one common reading.
