Zi Wei’s annual transformationsWu year

In 2018 Zi Wei Dou Shu lights four stars: one carrying 祿, one 權, one 科, one 忌. The four stars are the same for everyone; which square they sit in on your chart is what is yours.

LuTan Lang 貪狼 · is where something comes to you祿 means “something comes in”. Wherever it sits, that part of life tends to flow in more easily this year. Tan Lang: wanting many things, and actually going after them. You live vividly; wanting everything at once is how it all stays shallow. glossary
QuanTai Yin 太陰 · is where you call the shots權 means “you call it”. Wherever it sits, that part of life tends to go better with you in the lead this year. Tai Yin: the inward one — fine, soft, and remembering a lot. Your care is detailed; the ledger you keep is rarely visible to anyone. glossary
KeYou Bi 右弼 · is where you are seen科 means “easily seen”. Wherever it sits, that part of life tends to draw notice this year. The other helper — softer, arriving through goodwill. What rules can't move, relationships often do. glossary
JiTian Ji 天機 · is what you cannot let go忌 means “hard to let go”. Wherever it sits, that part of life stays on your mind this year. Not bad — it is what you care about. Tian Ji: a fast mind, working several moves ahead. You think far and quickly, and tire on things that have not happened. glossary

The same Tan Lang 貪狼 carrying 祿 says different things in different squares:

in “money”money tends to come in more easily. The internet’s “money while you lie down” year is true for this person only.
in “your body”the body is comfortable and rest comes easily. Not more money — more ease.
in “friends and contacts”friends help, someone picks up the bill. The gain comes from other people, not from lying down.

The same goes for Tian Ji 天機 carrying 忌: in the work square it is “work gets stuck”; in the love square it has nothing to do with work. So one sentence about a whole year misses three people in four.

Curious how it works?

The transformations follow the year stem: one set for each of the ten stems, round every ten years. This page uses the 全集 school’s table. The annual life palace is the square the year branch falls on; the twelve annual palaces count back from it; only then, with the four stars placed, is it one person’s year.

This year’s stem and branchWu Xu

From 立春 (the start of spring), 2018 is the year of Wu Xu — the “year of the Dog” people talk about. The stem is the year’s weather, the branch its terrain.

Year stemWu · yang EarthWu: thick earth, a mountain. Steady, slow to move. People lean on you; turning around takes you a while. glossary
Year branchXu · Dog · EarthA Dog year: loyalty counts, and who stood where gets remembered. You guard your people, and split the world too cleanly doing it. glossary
納音平地木 · Wood life納音 pairs the sixty stem-branches into thirty images such as “water of the heavenly river”. It is a separate reading, not a summary of the stem and branch.

A year’s stem and branch only become a “flowing year” next to your own four pillars: whether it helps or presses on your day master differs from person to person.

Curious how it works?

The year pillar changes at 立春, not on 1 January and not at Lunar New Year. 立春 falls between 3 and 5 February; anyone born on those days needs the exact moment.

Nine Star Ki’s year star9 Purple Fire

In 2018 it is 9 Purple Fire’s turn in the centre; the nine stars take nine years to go round. It sets the year’s overall “climate” and which star each of the eight directions receives.

Fire: bright, visible, and clear-sighted. Good for showing your work; you also see who is leaving. glossary

The larger cycle is a twenty-year “period”: this is period 8 (2004–2023).

The year star changes at 立春: add the year’s digits down to one figure and subtract from 11 (2026 → 1 → 一白). The directions are on the home nine-palace page; your own natal star is on the compass.

Numerology’s universal year2018 → 11 → 2

The digits of 2018 add up to 11, which numerology keeps as a master number; beneath it is 2. One number for the whole world; your own “personal year” adds your birthday to it.

Two is the pairing number: waiting, listening, what two people do. With Two, stop pushing and sort the relationship first. glossary

11 is a doubled 1: senses sharper than usual, nerves tighter than usual. The internet’s “gentle year” mostly comes from the 2 beneath it.

The universal year is the background hum; your personal year is the tune. The two numbers can match or sit far apart.

Curious how it works?

Method: 2+0+1+8 = 11, then add the two digits down to one; 11, 22 and 33 are kept when they appear. Personal year = birth month + birth day + the universal year.

How to read this page

These four signs are the same for everyone. They are about the year, not about you.
Any “this year everyone will…” comes from one of these signs. Knowing which one tells you how far the sentence reaches.
To know what it means for you, the sign has to sit on your chart: once signed in, the Zi Wei page draws where the four stars fall for you, and the years page lists your own flowing years one by one.
